It is estimated that more than 60% of the population suffers from varicose veins and spider veins. Varicose veins are enlarged blood vessels that have widened due to a weakness in the vein wall or a problem with the valves that control blood flow. Spider veins are small superficial purple or red veins that spread like a spider's web below the skin. Excessive exposure to the sun is believed to contribute to the dilatation of the spider-shaped veins.
